2016 – what a great year for gluten free!

This post summarises all the great options I found around the world for gluten free in 2016.  The 100% gluten free series has continued to grow, now listing over 70 venues around England and there is an increasing 100% gluten free scene in Australia, with Melbourne and Victoria covered here.

UK – 100% GLUTEN FREE

London 100% gluten free street food, ENGLAND

The London 100% gluten free list got so long it had to be split in two!  The street food scene includes markets and food trucks around central & greater London.

 

Edinburgh 100% gluten free, SCOTLAND

Crepes, cakes or healthy food, you have three different 100% gluten free options in Edinburgh.

This is the first in the series of 100% gluten free venues outside England – more to come in 2017!

 

Northern England 100% gluten free, ENGLAND

There are around 13 options ‘ooop North’, including the winner of the 2016 Free From Eating Out Awards, Labyrinth Holistic Cafe in Stockton on Tees.

 

South East England 100% gluten free, ENGLAND

There are around 15 options ‘down South’, including two pubs and two runners up in the 2016 Free From Eating Out Awards, Willow (Kingston) and Knife & Fork (Oxfordshire).

 

Niche restaurant, London, ENGLAND

Islington in North London is home to Niche which is a lovely restaurant to meet friends for lunch or dinner.  They have received accolades on social media for the parmesan doughnuts and “NFC” (Niche fried chicken, a KFC alternative!).

London fine dining, ENGLAND

Some gluten free options for somewhere special to dine out in the capital, including new reviews for Roast (Borough Market) and Pollen Street Social (Mayfair).

Don’t miss out! There are more options for gluten free pasties than you might think – in store and online.

 

Pho,  London and around the UK

A Vietnamese street food chain that was always great for gluten free, but in 2016 was accredited with Coeliac UK and the menu is now 99% gluten free.

The King’s Head, Teddington, ENGLAND

Run by White Brasserie Company and they create pubs with a nice feel (often in lovely historic buildings), serving French brasserie style food with an English twist.  Ask for the GF menu.

 

AUSTRALIA – 100% GLUTEN FREE

Red Robyn CafeCamberwell, MELBOURNE

A 100% gluten free cafe that also caters for many other dietary requirements such as vegan and low FODMAP.  Inventive menu & tasty food!

Caffe Strada,  Ivanhoe, MELBOURNE

The place to go if you are missing nice bread and being able to have a sandwich for lunch!

Samuel Pepys Cafe,  Launceston, TASMANIA

A quirky coffee shop with lunch and dessert options.  Vegetarian and dairy free options are marked up and they are happy to help with other dietary requirements.

Caffetopia Warnambool, VICTORIA

Warrnambool is at the end of the Great Ocean Road and you can find safe food to eat at Caffetopia after the long drive from Melbourne!

 

New Freedom Bakery & Cafe,  Bendigo, VICTORIA

Bendigo is around a two hour drive from Melbourne, with a gold rush history. This bakery has amazing bread and has a small cafe attached (eat in or take away).

Evie’s Cafe,  Trafalgar, VICTORIA

If you are in Gippsland Evie’s is a great stop off to eat in or take away. It is 100% gluten free and caters for vegetarian, dairy free, low FODMAP and more!  Lots of home made cakes to choose from.

Yarralicious,  Warrandyte, VICTORIA

A friendly family run cafe that is a perfect stop off when heading to or from the Yarra Valley winery region.

AUSTRALIA – GENERAL

Foddies Cafe,  Albert Park, MELBOURNE

Foddies entire menu can be made gluten free and all food is low FODMAP. The menu changes seasonally and it is probably my most visited cafe this year!

Mamasita,  CBD, MELBOURNE

A popular Mexican restaurant in the centre of Melbourne – most dishes are gluten free and designed to share.  A great option if you don’t mind queuing to get in at busy times.

 

Sydney Airport

Gluten free options at the domestic terminal.  There are a few options (better than none!), but the I think the best option is Hudsons Coffee.

TRAVEL – EUROPE & ASIA

Paris, FRANCE

Many people seem to struggle with gluten free in Paris, but you don’t need to with this handy guide*!

*including several 100% gluten free options

Rome,  ITALY

Even though it is the home of pizza and pasta, Italy is surprisingly gluten free friendly.  This guide to Rome gluten free gives you 15 safe options* around the city.

Hong Kong, CHINA

A few days in Hong Kong were survived thanks to the Kowloon Shangri-La and M&S Food!
