Charley Noble gluten free Wellington

Charley Noble is a warehouse style bistro/restaurant close to the waterfront in Wellington city centre.  I was very keen to try it as it is one of a small number of venues accredited by Coeliac New Zealand.

We hadn’t made a booking (but you should if you fit the bookings policy) and it was absolutely buzzing at 7pm on a Saturday night.  If you don’t have a booking, you will be advised how long the wait may be and you can have a drink at the bar until your table is ready.

The staff were all young and friendly and wearing a uniform of jeans and t-shirt covered by an apron.   The diners were a mixture of couples, small groups and large groups.  The kitchen is open, so you can see the chefs busily preparing the meals which have a focus on local ingredients.

I knew there was a separate gluten free menu from looking online and was promptly given it when asked.  The gluten free menu is almost as large as the standard menu, so you have plenty of choice.  The fries are noted as being cooked in a fryer shared with gluten containing items, so they are best avoided.

I chose an entree size risotto ($18) as well as a salad ($18).  The risotto was charred broccoli, macadamia, beurre noisette, pecorino and was absolutely delicious.  The fennel salad was a lovely refreshing offset to the reasonably rich risotto and added a bit of crunch.   It included serrano ham, but there is a vegetarian option.

My husband had the steak with fries, as well a side of mushrooms.  His meal was also gluten free apart from the fries, so I tried some mushrooms which were also very tasty (quite creamy and rich).

There were a number of dessert (eg pannacotta or sorbet) and sweet snack options (both the marshmallow and caramel popcorn was tempting) but we sadly didn’t have any room for more.

The only improvement I can suggest is to have the gluten free meal confirmed as it is served, just for added comfort that the meal is the correct one.  It is quite possible my choices were naturally gluten free but the confirmation would remove that little doubt that is always there when eating out.

Charley Noble is a lovely venue with great gluten free options, so a must visit for gluten free Wellington!  My husband had already enjoyed a couple of meals there while staying in Wellington for work, so it is popular irrespective of the gluten free availability.
