Barbados has plenty of fine dining options and we visited several that were a short taxi ride from our hotel, The Colony Club.

My favourite for location was The Cliff. It is a stunning setting on the edge of a cliff looking out over the ocean. Once it gets dark, fire lights provide a lovely glow.
The staff were able to explain the gluten free options, and I had a buffalo mozzarella salad for a starter and a tasty thai prawn curry for main with rice.
After a couple of days in Barbados we realised music was a big feature in life there. The taxi drivers all sang along to 5o’s rock and roll music and the restaurants generally were playing this style of music too. We classed The Cliff music as ‘furniture shop music’ which I think meant we didn’t really like it (I’m writing the post from notes made nearly a year ago!)
During dinner service, the waiters brought out a big container of meat leftovers from the kitchen to feed the fish and everyone looked over the balcony to see the fish come to get their dinner – including several sting rays. I had been swimming not far from there that afternoon, blissfully unaware of sting rays being present. Needless to say I spent the rest of the week in the pool!!
Tides restaurant is set right on the boardwalk running along the sea front.
We started in the bar, which is close to the street, and I was delighted to find one of my favourite drinks on the menu – a strawberry daquiri.
We were then shown to our table and got the quote of the holiday when we asked the waiter how he was as he replied, “I’m fantastic – I live in paradise, welcome to my office.”!
I discussed gluten free options with the waiter and for a starter had the spicy beef salad with corn, mushroom and sesame seeds with a mint and ginger dressing. This was very tasty and filled me up so much I struggled to finish my main. This was the lamb shank where they swapped the cous cous out for rice. The meat fell off the bone, but it was a little bit rich for me.
The Lone Star was my husband’s favourite restaurant for location (right on the beach) and also for food and also music, which was modern.
This was our only lunch outside of The Colony Club so the meals were a little lighter than the dinners. I love beef carpaccio, but thought it needed pepper and there wasn’t any on the tables. My main was a pumpkin salad which I enjoyed.
Daphne’s was the only restaurant that had a gluten free menu and also had gluten free bread, so they get points for that. It is also a lovely location right on the beach.
My meal was quite simple, but enjoyable. I started with a goat’s cheese baked endive salad with walnuts and finished with a mushroom risotto.
Despite the location and the food being great, we really couldn’t wait to leave as it was just so hot and we were sweating! It has lower ceilings than other places and there was just no air circulating and having a warm meal just made it worse!
Overall, I was very impressed with the gluten free options in Barbados, and of course the setting by the beach is spectacular. For other dining out ideas, please see the Restaurant Lists page.
